Several manufacturers made bayonets during WWII such as Hikari Seiki Seisakusho, Matsushita Kinzoku, Riken Kozai, Toyokawa Kaigun kosho and Toyoda Jido Shokki Seisakusho. This one has the markings of Kokura Rikugun Zoheisho (Kokura Army Ministry Armory) which made bayonets from 1935-1945. Early bayonets had the hooked quillion, fullered blade, contoured grips with escutcheons screws and birds head pommel. Later bayonets removed the quillion, fuller and had a straight wood grip as they tried to save time to crank out the bayonets. This one is an early war bayonet with all the early war features. Also, this has a theater made canvas sheath, which brings some extra interest to its history. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with semi-stiff spring tension. The pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have light oxidation and very small pin prick scattered erosion. The screw escutcheons securely fasten the grips to the tang. They have oxidized with time. The two wood grip panels have light compressions and draglines. The wood has dried out. The spine and sides have light handling marks, small pitting and a light superficial layer of oxidation. There are a few small nicks and dings on the blade edge. It has its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a semi-sharp straight point. The remaining finish has turned to a patina color. The right ricasso is marked with the Kokura Rikugun Zoheisho (Kokura Army Ministry Armory) logo. The back of the pommel has Japanese Kanji character and the serial number "67375". The theater made scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age. The reason for the average rating is not because of any unusual wear, but it it missing the belt strap. The canvas has no rips or tears, the stitching is sewn tightly, but again, the belt loop is missing. You can visually see where it used to be, there is residue outline of where it was. It is still functional to cover the blade though! There are scattered stains and discoloration throughout. There are no visible markings. This bayonet and sheath will be a great addition to your Japanese rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
