Total Kit Dimensions (Packed) in Shrink Wrapped Platform: 3 3/8" Wide x 2 1/8" High x 3/32" Thick, but compresses even thinner during wallet storage and carry The entire kit is packaged with water resistant plastic shrink wrap. Individual components in the kit are further protected with heavy duty packing tape for added protection. The entire kit isn't 100% waterproof....but really close to it! (1) Piece of Tinder Card, Compressed Waxed Tinder : The main platform for this kit is actually the firestarting tinder itself. The rest of the tools are nested into it's designed shape. This material is a European "Lighting Paper" that was originally designed as means to light charcoal...but they make GREAT emergency firestarters! To use: Cut or tear off a small piece....and fluff the fibers into a FINE nest of airy tinder and it will ignite with only a few sparks. (3) Strike Anywhere Matches, White Tip, Wood: The ole' standby in firestarting...a few white tip Diamond Matches to start even the most stubborn fire. The matches are nested into the card itself, and are covered with heavy duty packing tape. Striker strip included just in case.... (1) 3/32" x 2" Ferrocerium Rod: This is a small, but when correctly used, highly effective ferro rod for creating showers of sparks on your tinder. I've learned to lay the ferro rod along the inside of your pointer finger....with the tip of the rod extending about a 1/8" past your finger. Hold the other end of the rod with your thumb....like when making an "OK" sign but moving your thumb downward to the inside middle joint of your pointer finger. Use the included piece of striking steel to create enough sparks to ignite the tinder lay. These tools are small....so practice and patience are a must. This Ferro Rod WILL BREAK if you use it too aggressively....but even then you'd still have two little Ferro Rods...Practice Makes Perfect!(1) Striker, Carbon Steel Blade: The striker is made from a Carbon Steel Hacksaw Blade, about 2" long with rounded edges and with teeth on the cutting edge. The striker can be used with the flat portion or the toothed edge. Also, the striker can act as a "mini" saw for making notches in wood branches for fishing and trapping. The edges have been rounded for safety, and comes in a dull metallic finish.(1) Fresnel Magnifying Lens: Also included is a credit card sized Fresnel Lens that can be used to concentrate sunlight in order to create a coal in your tinder pile. It also is very useful for close 'eyeball' work in the field...like threading needles, removing splinters, etc. While this isn't the 'first' tool in firestarting....I have used it successfully several times (in optimum conditions....dry, hot, and sunny).
