Description: Here is a beautiful, rare 1954 Vogue Special Design pattern, number S-4549. Description reads, "One piece Dress and Jacket. Slim skirt with openings at side back seams, joins the bodice at waist line. Low, shaped neckline, front and back, cap sleeves. Box jacket buttons below a shaped collar. Opening at side seams. Three quarter length sleeves gathered to buttoned band cuffs." Please note this is a vintage size 16, which according to the pattern is a 34" bust and a 37" hip. What makes this extra fascinating is that based on the stamp "Sakowitz Bros, Houston 1 Tex", it was originally purchased at the luxury Sakowitz flagship department store, 1111 Main Street, in Houston. There was a department called "The Fabric Shop" where designer patterns and fabric yardages could be purchased. It's worth an online search- the fabric department and the entire store were absolutely gorgeous. The building exists today, but is now a parking garage :( The envelope is in rough shape, but the instructions and most of the pattern pieces look untouched. The back bodice piece has been pinned to other paper to make a different shape, but if you unpin it it looks like the original back bodice piece is not damaged. There is also a mystery drafted piece added with dots drawn on, which I have included, since it is part of the history now. It looks like this pattern was bought to use as a starting point for a custom design somewhere else.
