Scarce booklet with photographic views advertising and explaining the newly founded international residential club for women at 4 Rue de Chevreuse in Paris.The historic property in Paris which was to house the club was leased and then purchased by philanthropist and educator, Elisabeth Mills Reid (1858-1931) in 1893 and 1911 respectively. Reid established the American Girls' Art Club at the property which served as a residence and social hub for American women studying the arts in Paris. After the property was converted into a military hospital during WWI, Reid loaned it to a group of American university women led by Virginia Gildersleeve (1877-1965) who then founded the American University Women's Club. Gildersleeve, Dean of Barnard College, outlined her plans for the club in a letter to another founder, Alice Parsons, in 1919:"Its aim should be chiefly to bring the University women in touch with one another and with characteristic phases of French life and thought. It might begin as an Anglo-American center and later take in women of other nationalities."The club was officially founded in 1922 and laid the foundation for what was to become a decades long French-American collaboration in women's higher education. The property was gifted to Columbia University in 1964 by Reid's daughter in law, and it continues as a center of education in Paris today.
