Vintage Scottish Silver Moss Agate Brooch, Robert Allison, E/burgh 1971 Hallmark

Description: Pretty and charming vintage silver and moss agate brooch by Robert Allison, a Scottish silversmith based in the Gorbals area of the south of Glasgow. Originally learning his trade in Birmingham, he later returned to Scotland to make jewellery and other Celtic-related items. He was particularly influenced by Alexander Ritchie's iconic Iona silver jewellery and was known to use some original Iona designs in his own work. The company was first registered in Glasgow around 1941 and Edinburgh in 1954. It ceased trading in 1982. It features a lovely, highly-polished, semi-translucent stone with lots of delicate green filaments throughout. Moss agate is a semi-precious gemstone formed from silicon dioxide. It is a form of chalcedony formed from weathered volcanic rock which includes minerals of a green colour embedded in the stone, forming patterns suggestive of moss. The stone, which is a sizeable 2.1cms in diameter, is set in a silver collar in a border decorated with tiny, round silver shields interspersed with Celtic knotwork. On the reverse, is stamped on the back with his mark, (RA), the Edinburgh hallmark and the date letter for 1971. It fastens with a tube hinge and safety clasp for security. Measures 3.5cms in diameter and weighs 13.3g. Pebble jewellery has been produced in Scotland for hundreds of years, as our country is the source of an amazing array of chalcedony quartz gemstones or agates, which can quite often be picked up off the beach! This piece by this collectable Scottish silversmith is as wearable now as it was when crafted over five decades ago. It would look amazing fastening a pashmina or worn on a lapel!
