Gzhel blue and white ceramic pottery was produced starting in 1802 in the village of Gzhel and it's 30 nearby villages. The area is known for the high quality clay.Gzhel was known for pottery from the 14th century. Pieces were originally made by potters in their homes. Eventually the pieces were made in workshops and then factories. Between 1945–1949, the Gzhel began using cobalt paints on white clay to produce exquisite samovars.This decorative piece with its blue cobalt design dates to 1986-91 and is marked USSR. This decorative samovar is in excellent condition.Approximately 10 1/2 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches at its widest point. The base is approximately 3 inches square.
