Herbert Hoover ran on the promise of continued prosperity with lower taxes, a protective tariff, opposition to farm subsidies, the creation of a new farm agency, and the enforcement of Prohibition. In Hoover's acceptance speech, he promised "a final triumph over poverty". Unfortunately, those words came back to haunt him as The Great Depression struck during his Presidency. Hoover and Curtis were renominated in 1932, but they were solidly beaten by Franklin D. Roosevelt in the election. Charles Curtis was the Senate Majority Leader when he was pegged to run as the Vice Presidential candidate with Hoover. both in the Kansas Territory, Curtis was a member of the Kaw Nation. His father was a member of the Navajo Nation and his mother was a Dutch American. Curtis was known as the first Native American and the first person in a racial minority group to reach either of the highest offices in the executive branch. Curtis also was the first Vice President to open the Olympic Games. While in the White House, Curtis was not very involved in running the nation. He attended a few cabinet meetings, but his main role was to represent the White House at social functions. Seller will combine shipping on items closed within three days of each other.
