Vintage 1950s Lancastria Made in England RARE Wallpaper Sample Sheet Single Roll

Description: Vintage 1950s Lancastria Made in England RARE single wallpaper sheet -- model name is "Redouté" Washable and fadeproof. This was from the early 1950s. Never used. No glue or paste on the back. Very rare and obscure. Measures 23 1/2" long x 17" wide approx. I believe this was a salesman's sample. Edges are a bit jagged on one side but can easily be cut by the buyer to be completely even. This is one of the "Lancastria" range of wallpapers launched in England around 1949, though new sets were issued through most of the 1950s. Great Britain was suffering from a shortage of paper immediately after World War II and paper was only made available for wallpaper production in order to raise revenue through exports. The Lancastria set was an export range aimed primarily at the United States, though some papers were sent to other countries such as Australia. Lancastria wallpapers were semi-washable, featured large scale dramatic patterns in bold colors, and were ready trimmed pieces. The Lancastria line of wallpapers demonstrated a significant shift in design (and ultimately interior decoration) that was to affect many Western countries in the 1950s. In November 1951, the Australasian trade journal, 'The Decorator & Painter for Australia & New Zealand' announced that these new Lancastria wallpapers displayed "designs of architectural beauty which are entirely new to Australia" and that the colors were American in style: "their tastes are considerably different to ours, they like high colours such as gold and brick red, backgrounds with roses and vivid stripe decorations."
