Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Imagine a cup of coffee with cream for 10 cents -- 5 if you ordered a meal? That was what it cost to eat at Schwede’s Confectionary and Luncheonette during the 1930s. Located near the corner of 58th Street and Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn, Schwede’s featured broiled bacon, lettuce, tomato and cheese club sandwiches for 30¢ (including an olive and dill pickle), sliced chicken or tongue and cheese sandwiches for 25¢, bacon and tomato for 20¢ (no lettuce), and cream cheese and pineapple or sardine sandwiches for 15¢. For dessert, a slice of pie was 10¢ and a la mode was a nickel more. Cokes were 5¢ if you drank them at the counter. And you could take home a box of homemade miniature chocolates from the candy counter or a quart “brick” of ice cream for 50¢. Based on the prices and telephone number on the front cover (including a small picture of a candlestick telephone), we figure this dates back to the Depression, certainly before World War II. The menu is small, 8 x 5.25 inches (20 x 13 cm). In used condition as printed on off-white cardstock, in two pieces. That wouldn’t show if you put it in a nice frame. Would look good on the wall of a country or general store, antiquely modern-day restaurant, or a kitchen. Shipped free in US.
