Description: The author was involved in establishing the first Missionary Volunteer Society for Adventists...Matilda Erickson Andross had been born in Denmark in1880 to parents who had only recently joined thischurch. About a year later the family moved to the wildprairies of Iowa, where Matilda grew up in a' happyfarm home. After attending public school and UnionCollege, she taught in public schools for three years, then completed the two-year nursing course at NebraskaSanitarium, wanting very much to become a doctor. However, she was persuaded not to continue inmedicine and so decided to return to Union College toqualify herself more thoroughly for teaching. Then inthe middle of her senior year Elder A. G. Daniells, president of the General Conference, asked her to come toWashington to help the Sabbath School Departmentwith its new work for young people.Few people receive a call to the General Conferencewhile still in college, but Matilda Erickson's reactionwas typical of her .. Perplexed, she thought, "Does theLord not want me to be a teacher ?" She earnestlysought counsel, read a book on divine guidances, andprayed until. she was satisfied that the Lord was callingher. But "it was not without a heartache that I badefarewell 'to my classmates and dear old Union," shewrote later. So in March of 1907 she went to "Washington, graduating in absentia. She felt a deep sense of awe andresponsibility, for she regarded her new job as God'swork and felt so inexperienced and inefficient as to bea problem to those she had come to help. Lookingback, she wrote, "What a relief it was to pray!" Andpray she did. On her desk she placed the prayer ofMinistry of Healing, page 474, "Lord, help me to do'mybest. Teach me to do better work. Give me energy andcheerfulness. Help me to bring into my service the lovingministry of the Savior." Matilda Erickson's responsibilities evolved as part ofa developing Seventh-day Adventist concern for itsyoung people. The first organized young people's society in a local church had been started in 1879 by LutherWarren, as a teenager, for the purpose of prayerThe first Read:ing Course assignment appeared in theInstructor October 1, 1907, and the first Morning WatchCalendar came out in January of 1908. These very likelywere the work of Matilda Erickson. Most of the officework and even much of the field work fell on her shoulders, since Elder Kern did a lot of writing and travelingand served on many committees.Miss Erickson took her work very seriously, feeling agreat burden for the young people. Where necessary literature did not exist, she wrote it herself. The department was responsible for lessons appearing regularly inthe Youth's Instructor. As the Reading Course programcontinued, Miss Erickson supplied some of the needsthat she felt....... She married and became Matilda E. Andross.Much more to say but no room...she wrote this book.
