"There's no body in the family plot."- A phony psychic/con artist and her taxi driver/actor boyfriend encounter a pair of serial kidnappers while trailing a missing heir in California. The medium Madam Blanche Tyler is engaged by the elderly millionaire Julia Rainbird who believes she is a spiritualist. After a séance, Blanche discovers that Julia is tormented by her past, when she forced her sister and unmarried mother Harriet to deliver her baby for adoption to avoid a family scandal. Julia promises the small fortune of ten thousand-dollars to Blanche if she finds her nephew and heir of her fortune using her physic powers. Blanche and her boyfriend George Lumley, who is an unemployed actor working as cab driver, investigate the whereabouts of Julia's nephew. Meanwhile, the greedy jeweler Arthur Adamson kidnaps wealthy people with his girlfriend Fran and requests diamonds for the ransom. When George's investigations conclude that Arthur Adamson might be the heir of Julia Rainbird, the reckless Blanche gets in trouble with the kidnappers. This was Alfred Hitchcock's final film before his death on April 29, 1980 at the age of 80. BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : At one point during filming, Bruce Dern questioned Alfred Hitchcock about why he was cast. Hitchcock replied, "Because Mr. Packinow wanted a million dollars, and Hitch doesn't pay a million dollars." It took Dern a while to realize that "Mr. Packinow" was Al Pacino. Pacino's asking price was so high because of the recent successes he had enjoyed (Serpico (1973) and The Godfather I & II (1972/1974). Roy Thinnes was hired to play Arthur Adamson only because Hitchcock's first choice, William Devane, unavailable. When Devane became available, Hitchcock fired Thinnes and hired Devane. Some key scenes (and publicity stills) had already been shot. Almost everything that had been filmed was reshot. However, the original long shots with Thinnes were kept and used in the final cut of the film. Concerning his decision to replace Roy Thinnes with William Devane, during a screening upon completion of the movie, Alfred Hitchcock turned to Dern and said, "I've made a terrible mistake, haven't I?"
