This U.S. artillery saber would make an important addition to any office, den, or business; and would make a fine addition to any collection. This sword was made by Ames, and is stamped with the date 1865. One side of the ricasso is stamped 'U.S. A.D.K. 1865'. On the reverse ricasso you can make out 'CHICKOPEE, MASS.' so this is an Ames sword. This sword has a leather-covered wood handle. The leather is wrapped with braided brass wire. The sword blade measures 32" long. The guard is stamped with the unit 'B.B. 31 24'. The scabbard has the braising line running all the way up the side. Condition:This Union sword is in excellent condition! Everything is nice and tight on this sword. The brass guard has an attractive patina. The blade has the expected mild carbon staining. The blade still has dried grease on it which served to preserve the blade nicely. A solvent like WD-40 (or other solvent) will help remove the dried grease (if desired).
