Description: Transition and Louis XVI styles, French book by A. Droguet Transition and Louis XVI styles, French book by A. Droguet This hardcover book with 160 full color illustrated pages presents the French Transition and Louis XVI styles. Almost 25 years before the advent of Louis XVI are felt the beginnings of the style that bears his name. It actually fits in neoclassicism that draws from the sources of ancient art – Roman, Greek and Egyptian – and continues through various transformations until 1830. This style is the first development of an art in search of the "ideal beauty" loving order, convinced of the purity and greatness of the art of the ancients, the merits of their architectural and decorative repertoire. This revival, sparked by the archaeological sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii, is a reaction against the excesses of the rococo style, and is inherent to the desire to reconnect with the size of the time of Louis 14th. Louis XVI style knows several phases, which can be defined as follows: "triumphant" first, from 1770 to 1778, coupled with the prosperous and euphoric years of the society and pushing of the young princes and their requirements, then, in a second time, from 1778 to 1785, "flowery" under the impulse of Marie Antoinette who acquires an actual position and affects the decorative arts by his taste for tapestry and her love for natural flowers, but also her brothers in law who always demand more refinement. Decorative arts reach perfection at this time, thanks to the intervention of mercers. Fed by diverse influences, decorative themes borrowed both the traditional repertoire classic and new iconography excavated of Pompeii than to the tapestries taste: knots, braids, drapes, valances, festooned, trimmings acorns and rows of pearls. Nature has its place in Rousseau's influence, and Figure comeback: human, animal or hybrid under the influence of ancient mythology. From 1785 to 1792, Louis XVI style becomes "austere". Under the pressure of social and financial crises aspirations crystallize to a return to virtue and civic and natural morality, the ancient heroic. Paradoxically they mingle with the naturalism derived from Rousseau's sentimentalism and from England, and the growing influence of this country. Louis XVI style then slides to a purity of forms, line and decor, but without rejecting any refinement. The ornamentation, by stripping, becomes more geometric and decor tends to become more abstract. During the reign of Louis XVI, art is brought to a degree of perfection and refinement that borders on excellence. So much so than it is not only the Parisians and the French, but all the European courts who get to Paris in search of this art made of grace, harmony, finesse and refinement to the extreme.
