Description: The Apache Trail in Arizona was an old Native American trail, hence the name. It linked Apache Junction at the edge of the Greater Phoenix area with Theodore Roosevelt Lake. Construction of the trail, which was known as the “Tonto Wagon Road” at the time, began in 1903. The route of this supply road followed the ancient footpath that is believed to have been used by the Anasazi tribes to trade the Hohokam. The path was used, in the early 1900s, to supply the building of the Theodore Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River in the Superstition Mountains. It ran from Tortilla Flat, just outside of Phoenix to the Dam site. The Trail winds steeply through 40 miles of rugged desert mountains, past deep reservoir lakes like Canyon and Apache Lakes. The narrow, winding road is unpaved from east of Tortilla Flat to the Dam, with deep cliff drops and a few safety barriers. After 1905, the character of the ApacheTrail began to change. While this road continued to serve as a supply route for the Dam, it soon opened up for public use. Several entrepreneurs began to provide transportation services along the road, which included both stagecoach and automobile. They recognized the unspoiled and spectacular landscape surrounding the road and marketed its appeal as a popular tourist destination. The dam was completed in 1911. The Apache Trail is 39 miles long and is now State Route 88. This card was published by the “Albertype Co”., in Brooklyn for the “Apache Lodge at Roosevelt Dam”. There is no dating of the card, but it looks to be a DB, 1907-15, and is in Near Mint condition with minor wear and a clean, clear, uncredited Hand Tinted “Scene on the Apache Trail”. The card is not posted, and the reverse is clean. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
