Description: The New Order of St. Katherine for Nurses; A sketch in the Bouverie Ward, The Westminster Hospital This is a colored wood print by Henry Wood from the August 9, 1879 edition, page 125 of The Graphic (London). Most prints from The Graphic were uncolored so this colored print would make a lovely framed piece of art. The print depicts nurses wearing the insignia of the Order of St. Katherine as arm bands. The insignia of the Order of St. Katherine is also depicted in the upper left corner of the print. The nurses are shown caring for patients in a ward that was typical of the time. The Graphic was a weekly newspaper published from December 1869 until 1932. It was a rival to the Illustrated London News. Mr. Henry Woods was an engraver for The Graphic from its inception in 1869.The Westminster Hospital was founded in 1719 and closed in 1994 when it moved to the site of the old St. Stephen's Hospital in Fulham Road. This would make a wonderful commemorative gift for a nurse or doctor who trained and/or worked at The Westminster Hospital, London. I have decided to sell many of the antique prints related to nursing and Florence Nightingale that I have collected over the years. Please review my other items if you are interested.
