On November 12, 1916, Pickford, director Maurice Tourneur, and additional cast and crew were shooting the film's climactic scene when their boat spring a leak. Two cameras were lost as the schooner went down, and Tourneur had to rescue Mary after a rough wave knocked her unconscious. Much of the movie was shot in Fort Lee, New Jersey, with outdoor scenes filmed on the New England shore, doubling for the Scottish coast.
