The Polar Express is a 1985 children's book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, a former professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. It was adapted as a Oscar nominated live-action motion-capture film in 2004. The book is now widely considered to be a classic Christmas story for young children. It was praised for its detailed illustrations and calm, relaxing storyline. In 1986, it was awarded the Caldecott Medal for children's literature. This lot was part of a signature auction for Rare Children's Literature from Justin G. Schiller, Ltd. provenance. Iona Opie collection pedigree. Prior to this find, our second edition signed copy was believed to be the earliest known inscribed. So here in this lot you have not one but two of the earliest known signed inscribed editions by author Chris Van Allsburg. Second printing, number line 10 to 2 on the copyright page. Signed and inscribed by the author to Iona Opie, dated 12/7/85, one of the earliest known, next to the other one in this lot. To front free endpaper recto. Oblong Octavo. Unpaginated. Illustrated by the author. Publisher's pictorial silver-stamped maroon cloth; original illustrated dust jacket. Minor edgewear and soiling. Opie Collection ink stamped to front pastedown. Internally generally clean; minor foxing to front of text block. Dust jacket unclipped, small closed tear to bottom edge of front panel. Very good. The unbound proof copy is 1 of 2 that have come to market or known to exist and is the desired uncorrected proof, with finished pictures and copyright as the first edition, considered extremely rare.
