Don't miss out on the opportunity to own a piece of history from The Computing Scale Company. Made in Dayton, Ohio USA circa early 20th century. This is a early 1900’s Horizontal Barrel Computing Scale, from The Computing Scale Company of Dayton, Ohio. The Computing Scale Co., later known as the Dayton Scale Company, built and marketed the first computing scale in 1891. This one appears to be Style #88 and was probably produced between 1905 and 1910, as the last Patent date was in 1904. Serial number unknown. The ornate brass, glass and cast iron scale would have been used for computing weight and price cost in a mercantile or general country store during the beginning of the 20th century. Interesting note from the IBM archives: The Dayton Scale Company, originally known as the Computing Scale Company, built and marketed the first computing scale in 1891. It was part of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company formed in 1911, and became an IBM division in 1933. The Dayton Scale Division was eventually sold to the Hobart Manufacturing Company when IBM decided to stop marketing scales to retail stores. The Barrel scale still "works" but definitely shows its age in the decorative, missing end plate on the barrel, missing the original glass plate commonly used at the time.
