The Comanches. A History of White’s Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, Laurel Brig.,

Description: Myers, Frank M. (1840–1906) The Comanches. A History of White’s Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, Laurel Brig., Hampton Div., A.N.V., C.S.A. Written by Frank M. Myers. Late capt. Co. A, 35th Va. Cav. Approved by all the officers of the battalion. Baltimore: Kelly, Piet & Co., 1871. 12mo. 400pp. Original dark green publisher’s cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. A number of pages gently bumped on one corner; p235/236 with tiny corner-tip loss; very good or better. Especially handsome and likely a family copy, with provenance noted in pencil on the book’s front free endpaper: “J.P. Myers Oct 10, 1871.” First edition of this rare Confederate regimental history of the “Gray Comanches,” described by Nevins as a “light, witty study of a cavalry unit; comparable in spirit and charm to John Casler’s narrative.” Harwell adds, “Myers might be called the Casler of the cavalry. This is an account written with realism and tempered with wit.” The author, Benjamin Franklin McIntosh “Frank” Myers, was the son of Washington Myers (1809–1888) and Francis A. “Fannie” Shawen Myers (1844–1892). The couple do not appear to have had another son. J.P. Myers may have been the author’s uncle or another relative. Later 20th-century book-related ephemera laid in. Howes M-930, “aa.” In Tall Cotton 129. Nevins I:135. Dornbusch II:1272.Our Stock# 3734139 About Us Established in 1995, Ian Brabner, Rare Americana, LLC buys and sells rare and antiquarian books and historical manuscripts published or created in pre-1900 America.
