Especially handsome and likely a family copy, with provenance noted in pencil on the book’s front free endpaper: “J.P. Myers Oct 10, 1871.” First edition of this rare Confederate regimental history of the “Gray Comanches,” described by Nevins as a “light, witty study of a cavalry unit; comparable in spirit and charm to John Casler’s narrative.” Harwell adds, “Myers might be called the Casler of the cavalry. This is an account written with realism and tempered with wit.” The author, Benjamin Franklin McIntosh “Frank” Myers, was the son of Washington Myers (1809–1888) and Francis A. “Fannie” Shawen Myers (1844–1892).
