Description: This is a rare and collectible set of Sturm's Reflections on the Works of God, published in 1807 in London by Thomas Davison for P. Wynne and son; Lackington, Allen, and Co.; and R. Scholey. The three-volume set was first translated from the German of Mr C.C. Sturm, into French; and now from the French into English. This translation is described in the text as “A new and liberal translation by the author of “The Adviser”.” Bound in original hardcover. Marbled inner covers and along the outside of the pages. Gilt titling, bands on the spine, and border on front and back covers and along all edges. Covers are approximately 10cm x 16cm, 4” x 6.25”. The spine of volume 3 is creased, and there is a small spot (3mm x 4mm) of loss at the back bottom cover. Otherwise, all three spines and covers are completely intact, with some rubbing on edges and bumped corners. Gilt shows on all edges of all three volumes. Creasing appears at the join of the cover and spine of each. Contents clean and bright with some browning and slight foxing to some pages. Each volume contains the original ribbon page marker. The reflections cover a different topic for each day of the year. Volume 1 goes through April 30, volume 2 through August 31, and Volume 3 through December 31st. Sturm includes reflections on topics from the “amusements of winter” to “curious structure of the ear,” “wine,” and “instability of all earthly things.”
