Description: Rare sterling silver trophy cup awarded to one of the top British athletes of his generation, Guy Butler who would go on to win a gold medal at the 1920 Olympic Games held in Antwerp. The trophy was originally awarded to Guy Butler by Harrow School when Guy was a student there in 1913. The front of the trophy is engraved with the Harrow School Crest & is further engraved: "HARROW SCHOOL SPORTS. G.M. BUTLER" The obverse of the trophy is engraved with the details of the race for which the trophy was awarded: "HEATHERDOWN 1913. 220 YARDS. Guy M. BUTLER" Clearly Guy Butler decided to keep a record of his future athletics successes by having his achievements engraved all around the trophy cup right up to his Olympic Games successes in 1920. There are details of his athletic achievements at Harrow School in 1915, 1916. 1917 & 1918. Later in 1918 his athletics achievements at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst are recorded as are his successes for Cambridge University Athletics Club in 1919. For the year 1920 Guy has his results engraved for the Inter University Sports & finishes with his Silver Medal & Gold Medal achievements at the Antwerp Summer Olympics. Guy went on to win two further Olympic Games bronze medals at the 1924 Olympics in Paris but these successes are not engraved on the trophy cup. The trophy comes complete with its original ebonised wooden plinth in an octagonal design. Included with the trophy is a photo reprint depicting Guy Butler and a printout of the Wikipedia page relating to the athlete. Sterling Silver Trophy Cup: Weight: 406.1 gm. Height: 140 mm. Guy Montagu Butler (25th August 1899 - 22nd February 1981): A British sprinter who won the gold medal in the 4 x 400m relay at the 1920 Summer Olympics. In total Guy won 4 Olympic medals and shares the British record for the number of athletics medals with Sebastian Coe, Christine Ohuruogu & Mo Farah. Guy was born in Harrow and attended the prestigious Harrow School (where he won the trophy for sale). As can be seen from the engravings on the trophy Guy was a superb all-round athlete who went on to achieve Olympic success in 1920 & 1924. In 1928 he became the first British track & field athlete to compete in three Olympics; he reached a 200m quarter final & retired shortly thereafter. Summary: As can be seen from the photos this is a rare trophy in the history of British athletics. First awarded by Harrow School in 1913, the engravings on the trophy take us right up to Guy's gold & silver medal successes at the 1920s Olympics. The trophy was in the personal possession of Guy Butler who would have organised the engravings as a record of his achievements. He was clearly very proud of them. Good luck!
