Sidi Mag-1 Boots

Description: Like the Vortice, the Mag-1 utilizes a ratcheting wire-loop system for closure and fitment, but the Mag-1’s all-new Micrometric Tecno 3 system employs a magnet in the redesigned clip attached to a steel wire loop (versus nylon on the Vortice) that significantly eases the process of clipping the loop in and tightening it down. Thermoplastici polyurethane straps are used under the loops in both upper arch and lower shin areas to ensure maximum support and snug fit. Both the arch and Achilles areas of the boot use Sidi’s exclusive elastic textile and injection-molded polyurethane comfort panels. Sidi’s shock-absorbing heel cup has been slightly redesigned on the Mag-1, with a smoother inner portion to allow better contact and less marring of bike parts, while still offering excellent impact protection on the back and outer areas. The dual-compound outer sole, nylon inner sole with removable arch support pad, and fiberglass-reinforced plastic toe slider with alloy insert and adjustable air intake are all identical or very similar to the Vortice. Entry into the Mag-1 boot is much simpler than many other boots because—as previously mentioned—it has no zipper closure. Instead, the Mag-1 is basically two interlocking sections that are cinched down with the ratcheting Tecno 3 mechanisms. Thus, you simply open up the boot, slide your foot in, close it, and then cinch down the three wire loops—no checking to ensure that multiple interlocking flaps were correctly positioned and no working on a seemingly endless number of wire loops. We were initially wary of the Mag-1’s fit without a zipper closure on the bottom half, but once everything was cinched down, there was no loose feeling anywhere; there was a slightly less supportive feel around the ankle than the Vortice, but otherwise your foot and lower leg feel well protected. Overall control feel with the Mag-1 boot is excellent once you spend some time in them. The boot is stiff initially and requires a little break-in around the instep area, but once it gets worked in, the Mag-1 feels a lot more comfortable than a lot of other boots we can think of that had been worn for months. The toe sliders are some of the best in the business; they don’t get in the way when you’ve got the balls of your feet tucked up onto the peg, and the alloy insert keeps the FRP from wearing too quickly. We weren’t that impressed with the toe vent though because, unlike the Vortice, there’s no exit vent for airflow, so the actual cooling effect is minimal. Another plus with the Mag-1 is that it’s significantly lighter than the Vortice, scaling in at 4.4 pounds (17-percent lighter). But the biggest advantage over the Vortice possessed by the Mag-1 is this: You won’t announce your presence to anyone within earshot in the paddock with the incessant squeaking of your boots as you walk.
