He suffered a broken marriage and alcoholism before he had a conversion, became Catholic layman and a Third Order Franciscan, and traveled to Molokai, HI to work with Father Damian and Mother Marianne Cope (who are both canonized saints). He became an expert in the care of the leprosy patients there and his cause for eventual canonization is ongoing.
