SAYERS: Gaudy Night (Lord Peter Wimsey, No. 10) (Avon Books, 1968)

Description: TITLE: Gaudy Night (Lord Peter Wimsey, No. 10) AUTHOR: Sayers, Dorothy L. PUBLISHER: Avon Books, Date: 1968 ISBN: 0380215921 FORMAT: Paperback, 383 pages EDITION: First Paperback Edition Thus PRINTING [if applicable]: 8th Printing (c. 1975) BOOK CONDITION: Fair JACKET CONDITION: No Jacket (As Issued) DIMENSIONS (if available): 7.00 x 4.25 x 1.00 in. approx. KEYWORDS: Dorothy L. Sayers, Gaudy Night, Oxford, Harriet Vane, Peter Wimsey, Poison Pen, Sinister, Pranks, Women's College, Historical, 1930s DESCRIPTION: From the back cover: "GAUDY NIGHT is a time when all manner of strange things happen, but never so strange as when Harriet Vane returned to Oxford. She was confronted with poison pen letters, loathsome drawings, scrawled obscenities, and attempted murder. Only her old friend and lover, LORD PETER WIMSEY could rescue her from the madness of that night..." Attentive readers will note that the publisher's description above gets the story almost completely wrong. That being said, the third volume in the Wimsey / Vane books, following Strong Poison (1930) and Have His Carcase (1932), is a carefully crafted and thoroughly delightful tale of old scores and past sins in the early years of women's academia at one of the great English universities. CONDITION: Fair condition overall. Significant wear to the covers, spine rolled and creased, original B. Dalton Bookseller price tag on front cover, creasing and bumping. Contents are age-toned, pages 290 to 314 appear to have been slightly wet at some time (paper ripples and some bleeding of the red edge-stain, text is not affected), but no other internal markings have been noted. If you're collecting the Avon editions of Sayers's Wimsey novels, this would be a suitable placeholder, or an acceptable reading copy for a week's holiday at the beach or in the mountains, or lost on a longboat in the the Fens...
