Revitalizing a Nation: A Statement of Beliefs, Opinions and Policies Embodied in the Public Pronouncements of General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur: Correlation and Captions by John M. Pratt, Introduction by Norman Vincent Peale, D.D. WARNING: Some of the material contained in the book may be offensive. This is an odd little book. The context of the time was that MacArthur had been relieved of command by Truman…and MacArthur had an axe to grind. Many of his post-military career speeches seemed to focus more on attacking Truman as lacking a vision or policy for the post-war United States. The casual reader might well think MacArthur was the author; in fact, other sellers list him as such. In truth, John Pratt took the public pronouncements (not just formal speeches, but interviews and other sources) of MacArthur and created a loosely structured collection of “soundbite pithiness” that kept MacArthur in the public eye and in the political structure. The introduction written by Norman Vincent Peale, a prominent pastor in the American Reformed Church adds legitimacy to the collection. My greatest concern is that some of the statements do support the selected heading…but are significantly lacking context. None the less, it is a fine piece of “publicity” for a man who is arguably one of the most brilliant military leaders of all time. As you read, just remember, MacArthur had his flaws, just as all of us do. ConditionBook cover is wavy, as if exposed to extremely humid conditions. Corners bent and creased. No evidence of water damage. Binding is tight; hinges have separated from glue of this pulp paper book. Gutters are intact. Pages tanned due to age. No pages torn or creased; no writing, highlighting, annotations or marks of any kind in book. This item is from my brother-in-law’s personal collection.
