Just released from a private collection, this superbly printed etching with delicate dry-point lines, strong contrasts, selective wiping and fine shading, was pulled from the original plate as created by Rembrandt in 1630. The etching is on Ingres d'Arches off-white laid paper (watermark) with large margins. Signed with the initials (RHL) and dated in the plate (upper left). A 20th Century impression printed by Marjorie Van Dyke, et.al., is from the "Millennium" edition. Marjorie Van Dyke carefully studied various states and proofs of the etchings created from the plate of "Bust of a Man Wearing a High Cap; Three-Quarters Right" and was quoted as saying ..."we have adhered faithfully to Rembrant's intent, vision and printing technique." "This impression surpasses in richness, quality and subtlety the impressions pulled from the plate in the last two centuries of previous owners." Art historians believe that this etching depicts Rembrandt's father, but there is no conclusive evidence to support this believe. However, it is interesting to note that his father, Harmen Gerritszoon van Rijn, died the same year this etching was completed.
