Dark Carnival was Ray Bradbury’s first book, a collection of dark fantasy tales published by the legendary Arkham House in 1947. It collected twenty-seven stories, most of which had appeared earlier in Weird Tales magazine. There were also six previously unpublished stories. Any one of those “new” stories would have made the book worth buying. There’s no question, some of Bradbury’s finest stories are found in this collection. The acclaimed “Homecoming”, which established Ray’s “family”. The much adapted and endlessly fascinating “The Jar”. The much imitated but seldom bettered “The Small Assassin”, in which a paranoid mother who thinks her baby is out to get her – turns out… to be right. And “The Next in Line”, one of Ray’s Mexican stories, set amid the mummy-filled catacombs of Guanajuato. Book #3 -- Gauntlet Press signed lettered edition (PC Copy), published 2002 PC copy of letter edition in Gauntlet's custom traycase. It is in a beveled leather traycase with a drawer and handle (one of the most elaborate traycase) with the original U.S. and U.K. covers inset on the front and back of the traycase, and the 32 bonus pages of materials. Signed by both Ray Bradbury and Clive Barker. Includes Time Intervening and promotional CD. One of only 10 signed PC copies, but this one also includes the extras and the traycase. Gauntlet Press's special edition of Ray Bradbury’s first (and almost impossible to find) short story collection DARK CARNIVAL. Anyone who has read any of the Gauntlet Press's previous Ray Bradbury “classic-revisited” books knows this is not just a reprint of the original, but the definitive edition. The cover art for this book is the haunting Bradbury oil painting you see on this page, which Bradbury painted around the time he wrote DARK CARNIVAL. It was not painted for the book, but is a perfect cover for this lost classic. As they did with Richard Matheson’s HUNGER AND THIRST there is no lettering on the cover. There is a lot of detail you can’t make out in this image that enhances the art, so the title appears only on the book’s spine. The jacket design is by Donn Albright and Buddy Martinez. Clive Barker, a great fan of Bradbury’s work, wrote an afterword and signed the Lettered along with Bradbury. Here is the Table of Contents of the original edition.
