Description: This is an original 1924 etching, from the series of 55 etchings by the artist, in the book "Dingo", published that year by Ambroise Vollard Editeur. The edition was 350. "Dingo" featured dogs and their unique habits and characteristics. This image is adorable, and accurately illustrates how dogs interact with one another---the black dog at left lifting his right paw, the white sheep dogs on their guard, sniffing out the newcomer to their territory. The print measures 13 1/2" by 10 3/4" (sheet) and 18" by 15" as framed. PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947) is of course one of the major Post-Impressionist artists, at least one of his paintings having exceeded $10 million at auction and many in the million plus category. He decided early to become an artist, his first solo exhibition in 1896. Bonnard was a contemporary of Edouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis at the Academie Julian, and shared a studio with them. Along with them and his friends Ker-Xavier Roussel and Felix Vallotton, he was one of the founders of the famous "Nabis". Bonnard's work is prized for its intense color and busy, complex, and often intimate compositions. This etching is in generally good condition, with normal paper toning inside the existing mat, as shown in the images. There is old tape remaining on the reverse and I note a small foxing spot at upper right in the image. A simple black frame is available with the print at no extra cost (not shown). Photographs are unnaturally yellow as they were taken in late afternoon light, ask for new images.
