Description: We are happy to offer for sale here in our eBay store this absolutely gorgeous painting by the Philadelphia artist Carmen Lombardi (1922 - 2002). Lombardi was one of those rare artists who worked most of his life in almost total obscurity producing over 1000 paintings that he rarely if ever exhibited or showed or sold to anyone. Could you imagine someone painting such a gorgeous paintings and just putting it in storage never to be seen by the public. His paintings were discovered shortly before he passed, and now the public gets to enjoy the prolific output of his talent through his colorful paintings. He was enamored by the color palette of many of the great French post impressionist painters which you can clearly see that inspiration in his body of work. During our research we have come across many of Lombardi's paintings, and to us by far this is the most striking painting that we've seen from the artist. Although untitled, it could fittingly be called: Solitude A woman sits in complete solitude on the stoop of her brown house on a lonely desolate street in Philadelphia. She looks into the distant with that thousand mile stare. A stare that suggests she is pondering the circumstances of her life. Her happiness, her joy, or perhaps even her life's disappointments. Maybe she is contemplating a long lost love, or perhaps she is hoping for a better life. Whatever it is, that she is pondering, her stare is engaging, drawing the viewer in......wanting to know more about her. Just an exceptional painting. Looking at his body of work, it appears that he has used this woman in other paintings. Perhaps it was his wife or a relative or a neighborhood muse. We are unsure. The painting is oil on canvas, and it is unframed. Signed by the artist on the water drain grate lower right. Condition: One small canvas indentation (outward) to one corner but otherwise fine. Maybe some minor surface dirt. Carmen Lombardi Measurements: 24" x 30" Unframed "The toughest job any of us on this earth will ever have to do is to make an honest appraisal of ourselves." - Carmen Lombardi Carmen Lombardi was born July 16, 1922 at Frankford Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He was named after his mother, Carmen. He was born into a large family of four brothers and two sisters who resided at a home on 23rd street in Philadelphia. Carmen was mostly self taught. His brothers, Anthony, and Fred, were also painters. In fact, the children's parents thought Anthony was a better painter, so he was sent to Art school in Philadelphia. Carmen was disappointed at this, but kept on painting. And paint he did. For more than fifty years, he completed well over a thousand oil on canvas works. Carmen, also a former army engineer, who was stationed in Paris during World War Two, emulated the works of post-impressionist French painters he admired, including Matisse, Seurat, Monet, and Gaughin, incorporating their form and intense color into his work. He painted Paris scenes and the valley of southern France. After the war, Carmen settled in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and continued to paint Delaware, Bucks, and Montgomery County landscapes. The regions tree-lined streets and old Victorian homes inspired him. Most of the paintings Carmen did were of Philadelphia. He enjoyed painting scenes of the rain, and believed the rain brought out the colors and reflections of the light. Unfortunately, for the public, and Carmen, he never exhibited or shared his work with almost anyone. Carmen's large body of work was not discovered until a few months before his death. On July 21, 2002, at the age of eighty, Carmen Lombardi passed away from the late stages of bone cancer.
