Description: A modern armchair prototype designed by Paul McCobb for Calvin Furniture Co. Circa 1962. Small string on arm of chair, possibly once used for identification from the manufacturer. Oak wood frame with tapered legs. This model has a wood seat for an upholstered cushion. Danish Scandinavian style. Calvin Furniture Co. of Grand Rapids, MI was founded in 1953 and closed in 1973. This design was only in production for a brief period which makes this chair a unique item for modern furniture collectors. McCobb's work can be found in public museum collections, including at Brooklyn Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Provenance: This chair is from the personal collection of designer Ralph Rye who acquired it directly from the Calvin Furniture Co. in Grand Rapids when the Imperial Factory building factory closed. Ralph Rye is a multi-talented visionary with a career in city planning, architecture, interior design, lighting, and furniture design. Rye has collaborated with some of the finest furniture companies in America including Dunbar, Nessen, Thonet, Jens Risom, and Baker.
