Paavo Erkki Olavi Alanen, also known as Ekku (1942–2005) was a Finnish-born architect, cartoonist and artist who spent most of his career in the United States. His cartoons appeared in publications as varied as Suomen Kuvalehti, The New York Times, Penthouse, and Playgirl. During his student years, he was editor-in-chief of the Finnish children's magazine Äpy. Alanen graduated as an architect from the Finnish Institute of Technology in 1972 and soon left for the United States, where he rose to become the chief designer of a Columbus, Ohio architectural firm. Alanen also taught architecture at Ohio State University. He eventually established his own architectural firm in San Francisco. He married his wife, Cathy, in Helsinki in 1979. Alanen lived with Cathy and their three children in El Paso, Texas, for the last twenty years of his life. Suomen Kuvalehti, literally ‘Finland's picture magazine,’ is a weekly Finnish language news magazine published in Helsinki, Finland. This cartoon was published in that periodical in 1978. The Camp David Accords were a pair of political agreements signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on 17 September 1978, following twelve days of secret negotiations at Camp David, the country retreat of the President of the United States in rural Maryland. The two framework agreements were signed at the White House and were witnessed by President Jimmy Carter. The second of these frameworks led directly to the 1979 Egypt–Israel peace treaty. Due to the agreement, Sadat and Begin received the shared 1978 Nobel Peace Prize.
