Description: Omaha is the largest city in the state of Nebraska and the county seat of Douglas County. It is on the Missouri River about 10 miles north of the mouth of the Platte River. Omaha’s pioneer period began in 1854, when the city was founded by speculators from neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa. There was also a river crossing built called “Lone Tree Ferry”. With the development of the Omaha Stockyards and neighboring packinghouses in the 1870s, several workers’ housing area, including “Sheelytown”, developed in South Omaha. Its growth happened so quickly that the town was nicknamed the “Magic City”. Throughout the rest of the 19th century, the transportation and jobbing sectors were important to the city, along with breweries. In the 20th century, the Omaha Stockyards, once the world’s largest and its meatpacking plants gained international prominence and Omaha’s central location in the United States spurred the city to become an important national transportation hub and it became known as the “Gateway to the West”. This is a “Burlington Series, J.H. Keck” DB postmarked 1910 in Omaha that chronicles “Farman Street from 15th Street”. Farman Street, originally the main drag in Omaha, was named for railroad promoter Henry Farnam. The card is in good condition with minor wear and a clean clear image of a busy commercial street with horse and buggies, era autos, pedestrians, and signs for the “Merchantile Hotel”, “El Palencia”, “Balduff”, caterer & confectioner, “C.W. Hull”, coal & coke, Guns among others and two American Flags on buildings down the street. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
