Elizabeth (Lizzie) Alexander Clay originally owned this book. She was the wife of James Eldridge Clay, and they lived with their five children at Marchmont Farm near Paris, Kentucky, Bourbon County. Marchmont Farm is now a division of Claiborne Farms, Paris, Kentucky. Lizzie was the book's original owner, and then it was passed down to her youngest son, Charlton Alexander Clay, who owned it until he died in 1966. The book has a tissue cover frontis which has a crease. There are also lower corner creases on pages 63 through 68. The book does not come with a dust jacket. The book's top, fore, and bottom edges are foxed, soiled, and stained. The book has four illustration plates including the frontis by Gaston Fay. The book is inscribed on the second front end sheet by "Lizzie A. Clay Marchmont 1878." The ink bled over to the first end sheet, which also has a marking in the upper part of the page, "No 18 C.A.
