Description: A rare and beautiful Kwakwaka'wakw Hamatsa Secret Society ceremonial whistle. This is a genuine mid to late 19th century whistle......It is unsigned. The wood is probably Yew or Spruce....Very attractive golden brown hue. This musical instrument would've been used in a Hamatsa Secret Society ceremony. Blowing this whistle emits a wonderful low pitch sound that's similar to a howling wind. Quite powerful!!! This old whistle is comprised of wood; pine resin or animal glue and trade paper. It once had cotton string wrapped around the mouth piece, but it fell out many years ago. The overall condition is very good for its +100 years of age. Measurements: 7 inches x 2.5 inches.
