Description: Each pic is high resolution so you can zoom in if you wish. I took the pics outdoors late in the day. The darker part of the Borzoi's coat is darker than it appears in the pics, a dark gray, but not black. I adjusted the contrast a bit on some of the pics to more accurately show it's darker gray against it's white coat. If you need a few pics taken indoors, please let me know and I will use my photobox. The craftsmanship on this figurine appears to me to be of much higher quality than others I have seen. A Bit of History on the NeuTettau Borzoi The Russian Borzoi Wolfhound was massacred during the Russian Revolution because they were associated with the aristocracy. The Tettau company was founded in 1793. The clays, glass, alabaster or other materials in the vicinity of Tettau were known for their brilliant pure white color. Their previous company, Königlich privilegierte Porzellanmanufaktur Tettau, grew and they formed the new ones in the following decades. (Tettau is the name of a Village near Dresden, Germany; from 1815 to 1945, it was part of 5 provinces at different times.) Between 1904 and 1913, it again flourished, producing porcelain animal figures, lace figures, and a large variety of household wares. From what I understand, these Borzoi figurines were made between 1904 and 1913 (Antique) but the trademark was used 1920-1937 (Antique to Vintage) so more research can be done. The business continued to grow, expanding in size and markets, up to 1930, when it made even more changes. This particular Borzoi, which measures 10"long and 5-1/2" tall, is likely an antique based upon the time frame of the various trademarks used (the very latest 1937) but definitely is "vintage." One listing states it was made around 1913 but shows no pic of the trademark on the figurine for any time period. Tettau was one of the earliest firms to manufacture porcelain in Bavaria (1793). Rosenthal began about 75 years later (1879 in Selb). I did not find the trademark to be the only one that appears on this Borzoi on any other Borzoi. The Neu Tettau trademark is the sole trademark on this Borzoi and is quite faded. Often more than one trademark can be found on the Borzoi as the companies grew and later the War began with disputes between using "Germany" as opposed to "Bavaria" as actual place of manufacture. How these beauties survive in such excellent condition for 100 years is incredible! There are 21 trademarks, including evolution of "Gerold" and Gerold Porzellan and up to Dresden when Dresden used its trademark on Gerald Porzellan. (WW II also messed things up when one side of Germany refused to bow to regs and continued using Bavaria, but later buckled and added "Made in Germany" or "Made in West Germany." Rosenthal's company trademark even bore the Iron Cross at one time. This Borzoi can be recognized as the "Resting Borzoi." One new company name was created during this time, Gerold Porzellan, now known as "Gerold" porcelain. There were other corporate structures of the same name created at about the same time by the same people. From 1937 to 1960, Tettau used a dark green trademark which included the name of the company "Gerold & Co. Tettau" over "Bavaria." And the history goes on! If you compare this Tettau "Resting" Borzoi to the Rosenthal Borzoi "resting" in the same position, you will see a few differences in the pattern of their black and white coats, and in the fluff of the tail and hair on the back of the front legs. Otherwise, they are quite similar. Since they were handmade, each will have slight differences. I have not researched beyond identifying this older Borzoi, but speculating Tettau and it's many newer firms may have decided to carry on with this beautiful creature because it was selling so well. They later continued to be made for many years with the Rosenthal trademark as well. Some of the later figurines are trademarked Bavaria, others Germany. Please enjoy this beautiful animal! It's elegance and grace remain to this day. And it's condition is as if it was made yesterday! "He" or "she" weighs 1 lb. with no shipping materials. Each pic is hi resolution so you may enlarge them. (I do combine shipping. Also, if there is a stand or other support under the figurine, it is not included.)
