Kevin Rafferty is a Creative Director and Show Writer at Walt Disney Imagineering. Growing up in Southern California, Kevin began his Disney career in 1974 as a dish washer at the Plaza Inn before applying for an entry level position at Imagineering in 1978 during the massive recruitment period for Epcot. By the late 1980s, he found a niche as a writer and worked on numerous projects in the decades to follow, with plans to retire after the opening of Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. Kevin released an autobiography in 2019 titled Magic Journey: My Fantastical Walt Disney Imagineering Career. His son, Kevin Rafferty Jr., is one of the writers of the official Disney Parks Blog. Projects Kevin worked on or developed include: Typhoon LagoonThe Comedy Warehouse at Pleasure IslandStar Tours and the Tony Solaroni show in Pan Galactic Pizza Port at Tokyo DisneylandThe Twilight Zone Tower of TerrorThe 1994 version of Carousel of ProgressIt's Tough to Be a Bug!The Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management)Sonny Eclipse's show at Cosmic Ray's Starlight CafeBlizzard BeachTest TrackRock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring AerosmithMickey's PhilharMagicFinding Nemo Submarine VoyageToy Story Midway Mania!Cars LandMickey and Minnie's Runaway RailwayMost notable of the unbuilt concepts that Kevin worked on was Roger Rabbit's Hollywood, where he devised the story of the Toontown Trolley simulator ride. George Edward Wilkins (March 14, 1934 – November 2024) was an American musician, arranger, and composer who was best known for his work for his work with the Disney Parks. Wilkins' first foray into music was serving as a solo vocalist at Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit. Wilkins got his start in the music industry as a backup vocalist and vocal arranger for Patti Page during the 1950s. In the 1960s, he also co-founded the vocal group the Doodletown Pipers. By this time, Wilkins broke out as a composer for film and television with his work on the Rankin/Bass productions Return to Oz (1964) and The Wacky World of Mother Goose (1967). In 1979, Wilkins joined Walt Disney Productions as a protégé to composer Norman "Buddy" Baker, and was tasked with writing the arrangements for the Listen to the Land and Kitchen Kabaret attractions at EPCOT, which was opening in three years, but was thrust into a composer role for the entire park after Baker was involved in a car accident. Wilkins then became music director for EPCOT in 1981 when Baker was called away to compose and conduct the score for The Fox and the Hound. Wilkins arranged several versions of the song "It's Fun to Be Free", for the World of Motion attraction, and arranged the Journey into Imagination ride music. After several arrangement opportunities, Wilkins was finally tasked with lead composing duties on the Horizons pavilion, after Disney show development head Randy Bright had rejected the Sherman Brothers' compositions for the ride. Wilkins composed the pavilion's area loop, as well as all on-ride music and audio cues. Throughout his time at Disney, Wilkins acted as both a "composer in residence" as well as director of music for Walt Disney Imagineering. Wilkins composed the music for the original song "We've Come So Far" for Space Mountain in 1984, as well as an instrumental arrangement for the attraction's queue, which remains installed in the attraction and can still be heard today. Wilkins was soon called back to work on EPCOT after being tasked with composing the soundscapes for the new Living Seas pavilion with Russell Brower. Wilkins also did all arrangements for the Kitchen Kabaret replacement Food Rocks, and composed all score and audio cues for Test Track in the late 1990s. Wilkins' final project with Disney was writing arrangements for "it's a small world" at Hong Kong Disneyland, before retiring from the company around 2008. By the middle of the 1970s, composer Norman "Buddy" Baker had such an impactful and prolific presence at Walt Disney Productions that when he suffered a near-miss traffic accident the Studio panicked and asked him "Is there anyone that can do what you do?" Only one name came to mind: George Wilkins. Beginning his musical career as a teenaged vocal soloist for St Paul's Cathedral in Detriot, George went on to become a backup singer and arranger for Patti Page in the 1950s and co-founded the vocal group Doodletown Pipers. At this time he also began film composing for Rankin/Bass productions where he caught the attention of Buddy Baker who began contracting George for arrangement and orchestration for various minor projects. After being selected by Buddy to become his protégé, Wilkins went to work on his first assignment: EPCOT Center's Kitchen Kabaret quickly followed by the "Symphony of the Seed" opening scene to Listen to the Land (unused) and shortly afterward took over Buddy's responsibilities as Music Director for the entire EPCOT Center project while Baker went to London to score 1981's "The Fox and the Hound". Among George's incredible accomplishments creating massive sections of Epcot's musical tapestry, he took The Sherman Brother's barebones piano demos for "One Little Spark", "Makin' Memories" and "Magic Journeys" and arranged nearly an hour of symphonic (and synthesized) masterpieces for our friends Figment and Dreamfinder. As well as taking Buddy Baker and X Atencio's "It's Fun to be Free" theme to create 15 variations in stereophonic sound for the World of Motion's interior queue. George also returned to Epcot on several occasions to re-compose his own attractions as they were updated including, what could be considered to be the closest thing to a "cult classic", Living with the Land, featuring his acoustic guitar "barn music" and infectiously percussive pan-fluted finale. He also produced Food Rocks, gave Test Track its only musical cue and returned to the Imagination pavilion in 2002 to help fix the damage caused by the Journey into YOUR Imagination with a musical score to bring back Figment and the theme "One Little Spark". Of course, this is "only" an Epcot-centric encapsulation of George's astonishing body of work which includes impressive entrees such as the (truly) Great Movie Ride, the best version of Space Mountain, two Bear Band shows and the musical stylings of Sonny Eclipse just to name a few. Speaking from personal experience, ALL his music, which has served as the inspirational soundtrack to so many lives, is merely a dim reflection of his beautiful soul. And I am so thankful for the time, however brief, that I've spent with him. EPCOT MUSIC CREDITS(In Chronological Order)KITCHEN KABARET(Arr.) A personal highlight is music introduced in 1984 for Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom, which still plays today as you enter the queue. Among Wilkins’ final compositions for Disney were California Screamin’, the full Sonny Eclipse show, It’s Tough To Be a Bug and the infamous Superstar Limo. Wilkins retired from Disney following his final project in 2008, which was writing arrangements for Hong Kong Disneyland’s version of “it’s a small world.” Our thoughts are with George’s family at this time.
