Description: Large original WW2 British Army officer's 'FIELD COMPOSITE' map of "SALERNO" which was assembled for the Allied Invasion of Italy. The GULF OF SALERNO was the scene of a series of amphibious landings that launched the invasion, and the wide sandy beaches chosen for the operation are clearly visible. The individual sheets have been produced at a detailed scale of 1:50,000 and give a fantastic overview of the surrounding geography and the importance of the main routes inland from the coast. The printing date of the sheets is July 1943, just ahead of the Operation which began in early September. The four maps have been pasted together and there has been some slight discolouration along the joins over time as a result. However, the composite has never been folded and is still in great condition. There is a tiny piece of the bottom right corner missing (see photos). Needless to say, this is an important map documenting a critical moment in WW2 history. Will be shipped carefully rolled inside a cardboard tube. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, documents, photos etc. (Seller's Ref - DW0523 / 28)
