This handmade German antique marble has an enticingly deep reddish-burnt amber base; with a thick outer layer accentuating the rich appearance of the mica core hiding within. The core is textured with thick flakes that gleam out. With a hand-faceted pontil indicating that it is an early example dating from between 1850 to 1880. Larger mica marbles such as this almost always date from this formative period in marble production; making them a special category that illustrates a stage in the history of the German glass factories. Mica marbles have a limited but often intense range of colours; with a simple but elemental beauty ensuring their special place as one of the most charming German marbles. They are neither gaudy or complex, but have a clear or coloured transparent matrix imbued with light, reflected from a galactic swirl of glistening mica particles.
