Description: This exceptional Wakashan Lidden Basket comes from the Northwest Pacific Coast and dates from around 1900. It is in amazing condition with no broken coils or pulled stitches. Woven tightly with14-16 stiches per inch, the colors of orange, yellow, brown are faded but still distinctive against the natural fiber background. The drum shape is still nicely formed and the lid fits tightly. The knob handle on the lid is beautifully woven and still tight. The bottom of the basket is clean and undamaged with no wear to the edge, it is a wonder of the weaving art. Made of spruce root and sea grass that has held up over the years remarkable well. The top band of the lower section is a wide strip of spruce root held in place by smaller strips of the same material. The colors inside the lid and basket are still vivid and unfaded with vibrant blues and oranges.It is a large basket measuring 8.5" wide x 4.25" high. It is a treasure for any advance collector of Northwest Pacific Coast Native American art and basketry.
