Description: Autographed and inscribed 4.25” x 6” matte, double-weight original reverse blind stamped Foto Sluzba photograph, April 12, 1959.Ancerl (1908-1973) was certainly the most prolific Czech recording conductor of the 20th Century and one of the most prolific overall. He was trained by Alois Häba and Jaroslav Kricka at the Prague Conservatory. He also studied with Vaclav Talich. In 1931 he was Hermann Scherchen’s assistant in Berlin and also the conductor of the Osvobezené Divadlo, the avant garde theatre in Prague. From 1934 to 1939 he led the Czech Radio Orchestra. When Prague was invaded by the Nazi’s he lost his position as he was Jewish. He was kept safe until, November, 1942 where he and his family were transported to Theresienstadt concentration camp. The camp was the “model camp” used to show how the Nazi’s were treating the Jews and Ancerl led the orchestra there and is even shown in a propaganda film conducting the orchestra. His family managed to survive and in 1945 they returned to Prague, where he led the Radio Orchestra once again. In 1950 he was appointed Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic. Many consider it their greatest years. In 1968, after the Warsaw Pact, he left Czechoslovakia and went to Toronto where he was appointed Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until his untimely death. Ancerl’s recordings with the Czech Philharmonic on Supraphon are well worth your time, especially the Dvorak and Smetana recordings. That said he made fine Mozart and Beethoven recordings as well! He was also known for his leadership and conducting the works of new composers of his time. This is one of the very few autographed photographs we have had of Ancerl in 20 years. It is also a photograph taken right in the middle of his tenure as Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic and is absolutely pristine!
