BROWN His endorsement on the discharge paper of a Confederate soldier, accompanied by the final pay receipt of the same soldier Endorsement signed: "Approved Jno C. Brown/Col. 3rd Regt.", 8¼x10¾. Vertical signature. Certificate to be given a Soldier at the time of his Discharge, issued by the Army of the State of Tennessee. Issuing authority has been crossed out and replaced by "Confederate States of America" (unknown hand). Bowling Green, Kentucky, 1861 December 1. Discharge of Private John H. Doyel of the 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers, for medical reasons, signed "Robert T. Cooper", his company commander. Creased. Four horizontal 1 vertical fold creases. Lightly toned in center and at top left edge. Otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by payment voucher, 1 page, 7¼x9½. Private Doyel has signed receipt of his pay of $19.80, less $0.58 deducted for overdrawn clothing allowance. John Calvin Brown (1827-1889), a lawyer, entered the Confederate army with no prior military training, and was became captain, then colonel, of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry. Rising to the rank of Major General and to brigade commander, he participated in many battles, including Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and Franklin, suffering serious injury at the latter. He was Governor of Tennessee (1871-1875) and later a railroad President. No information is available on Captain Cooper or Private Doyel. Toned and creased. Multiple notches at upper left corner.
