Appleton and Company, 1881 Edition: First Edition Description: Hardcover. The first issue with "presumptive" in the last line of page 9 and no mention of this title among the advertisements at the rear. The first collection of Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908), a Southern newspaperman who adapted and popularized the African American folktales that he heard as a young boy growing up on a Georgia plantation. Beginning in 1879 with the appearance of "The Tar-Baby", Harris helped create a vogue for southern dialect literature featuring anthropomorphized animals like Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox whose predicaments illustrated folk maxims. Original green cloth binding, with pictorial gilt and blank stamping, and decorative endpapers. A staggeringly fine copy of a book seldom seen in this condition.
