Description: Description Pair of antique mid-19th century French porcelain square serving plates by Jacob Petit. Hand painted with an array of vibrant flowers and gilt trim. Gilt-decorated acanthus scrollwork to the handles. One is marked on the underside with initials J.P. in blue underglaze. Jacob Mardochee dit Petit (1796-1865) trained as a painter in Paris, travelled to Italy, Switzerland, Germany and England where he lived and worked as a theatre set designer. After a short stint at Sevres he purchased the Baruch Weil porcelain factory in Belleville in 1830 and in 1834 at the factory in Fontainebleau where he made Rococo-style porcelain noted for its originality and vivid colors.
