Description: Method of payment Indians Making Offering to the Dead, Burial Site - 1861 Hand-Colored Engraving An Original Historical Print from HistoryOnPaper This is a stunning 1861 hand-tinted engraved print...but with moderate to heavy aging Native American Burial Traditions/Rituals Vary Greatly Presented in this Engraving is representative of the Sioux of Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Canada The most prominent subcultures of the Sioux people are the Lakota, the Santee, and the Yankton-Yanktonai, reflecting the dialect that they speak. The Sioux painted the deceased’s body red, dressed it in fine clothing, and wrapped it in a buffalo robe. Food was placed inside of the robe, near the head. The body was then placed in a tree or on an elevated platform about eight feet above the ground. And there it would remain for a year, after which time it would be buried in the ground. These were called sky burials. The Sioux believe death is not an end of life, but the beginning of another journey for the spirit. I will send a combined invoice reflecting your savings. The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
