Description: Framed First Day Cover print Western WandererDean Goods Mixed Traffic Locomotive by Stuart Black These solid little tender engines were désigned by William Dean (1840 - 1905) of the Great Western Railway during the heyday of the branch Iine and "mixed" freight train. They could be found all over Wales and the south-west and west of England, plodding along hauling trains of wagons that carried everything from milk to gunpowder, or coupled to ageing coaches on a local service.Two hundred and sixty of these engines were built at Swindon Railway Works between 1883 and 1899. British Railways (BR) inherited 54 of them in 1947. "Dean Goods" locomotives were used overseas in both world wars. and the last one was finally withdrawn from servicein the UK in 1957.BR "Dean Goods" No. 2516. which was built in I897, has been preservedand is now on display at STEAM, the.Museum of the Great Western Railway at Swindon.This First Day Cover print was issued by the Royal Mail on the 1st. February 2011. It is framed in an A4 (30 x 21 cm, 12 x 8.3 inch) size frame. Also included is a 14.8 x 10.5 cm (5.8 x 4.1 inch) postcard showing the GWR Dean Goods stamp design.
