Maccoy began his art studies at the Kansas City Art Institute and continued with Ernest Lawson in Colorado Springs. Upon moving to New York City, he studied at the Art Students League and at Columbia University. In 1932 he began producing silk screen prints in New York City with his wife, Geno Pettit. During the 1930s Depression, he enrolled as a muralist in the Federal Art Project. He and Geno moved to Los Angeles in 1947 and co-founded the Western Serigraph Society. He taught at Jepson and Otis art schools until retirement in 1965. MacCoy died in Los Angeles on March 18, 1981.
