Description: Decorate your home with a Greek Oinochoe from Rhodes with yellow background.Oinochoe is a wine jug and a key form of ancient Greek pottery 5th-6th CenturyB.C. First side shows Phaethon.Phaethon was the son of the Oceanid Clymene and the solar deity Helios in Greek mythology. His name was also used by the Ancient Greece as an alternative name for the planet Jupiter, the motions and cycles of which were personified in poetry and myth.Phaethon, challenged by Epaphus and his playmates, sought assurance from his mother that his father was the sun god Helios. She gave him the requested assurance and told him to turn to his father for confirmation. He asked his father for some proof that would demonstrate his relationship with the sun. When the god promised to grant him whatever he wanted, he insisted on being allowed to drive the sun chariot for a day.According to some accounts Helios tried to dissuade Phaethon, telling him that even Zeus was not strong enough to steer these horses, but reluctantly kept his promise. Placed in charge of the chariot, Phaethon was unable to control the horses. In some versions, the Earth first froze when the horses climbed too high, but when the chariot then scorched the Earth by swinging too near, Zeus decided to prevent disaster by striking it down with a thunderbolt.Phaethon fell to earth and was killed in the process. On the other side shows Zeus as a Swan. Leda and the swan is a story and subject in art from Greek mythology in which the god Zeus, in the form of a swan, seduces (or in some versions, rapes) Leda.According to later Greek mythology, Leda bore Helen and Polydeukes, children of Zeus, while at the same time bearing Cstor and Clytemnistra, children of her husband Tyndareus, the King of Sparta. It is subtly suggested that Clytemnestra, although being the daughter of Tyndareus, has somehow been traumatized by what the swan has done to her mother. According to many versions of the story, Zeus took the form of a swan and seduced Leda, on the same night she slept with her husband King Tyndareus. In some versions, she laid two eggs from which the children hatched. In other versions, Helen is a daughter of Nemesis, the goddess who personified the disaster that awaited those suffering from the pride of Hubris..
