Description: This stunning oil painting is by Niotaze Sutherland and in her traditional style signed it “Niotaze” (with a backwards “Z”) and depicts the beauty of autumn in the Rio Grande Valley near Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have had this in my personal collection for many years and have also reviewed a number of her paintings over time and the signature matches perfectly. The painting, dated July 28, 1965 is titled “Autumn in the Valley” (see the back side as shown). The outside dimentions of the painting with the frame are 19” X 23”, and 16" x 20" for the paintings’ canvas panel it is painted on. As a very nice original NM painting of almost 60 years, and with excellent Native American subject matter of the Adobe Dwelling, it should be an excellent addition to any collection. Based on available historical information, Niotaze Sutherland was associated with the Kaw Nation (also known as the Kansa or Kansa people), a federally recognized Native American tribe primarily located in Oklahoma and parts of Kansas. As an FYI, If you look very closely at a couple of the pictures I showed where the painting rested in the frame at some point (probably shortly after framing) the very outline edge of the painting that doesn’t show stuck to the frame and and some paint transferred to the frame (including parts of the bottom of the signature but it doesn’t make it unclear to read). This is indicative of several paintings she did at this time. As far as the painting itself the use of oil painting technique on canvas panel and canvas material enhances the vibrant colors and details of the landscape. This piece displays a very nice scene for those who appreciate the beauty of this type of art and the rich history of the Rio Grande Valley. Please let me know if you have any questions and buy with confidence as I have been on eBay for over 26 years with 100% positive feedback.
