They were produced in the first half of the 1st Century B.C., most likely toward the middle of the century, and would have been in circulation during Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul on behalf of the Romans, from 58 to 52 B.C., which ended in the famous Battle of Alesia. The Aedui had negotiations with Julius Caesar, but ultimately joined the massive Gallic confederation that tried to defeat him, only to succumb to the Romans with Caesar's monumental victory, which brought Gaul strongly under control of the Romans.
