Description: Franz Kline (1910-1962) authentic painting, oil on canvas, signed lower right "Kline"; circa 25 x 30 inches, painted circa 1950 (old canvas, nails used on stretcher); taken off stretcher; provenance: New York City art dealer Samuel Kootz sent this painting and a number of other abstract expressionist paintings from New York City to California c. 1970, in storage many years, private collection; Kootz was probably the biggest dealer in abstract expressionist art even though his gallery closed in 1966 (the other three were Peggy Guggenheim (but she left New York and moved to Venice c. 1947 then focusing on Italian art (this writer actually went to the Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice while on vacation in 2023 and unfortunately there were very few significant abstract expressionist paintings in the museum at the time; Betty Parsons who received almost all of Peggy Guggenheim's artists inn 1947 (Betty Parsons referred to them as her "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse": Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still; then Sam Kootz (the biggest by far!!!) and then Sidney Janis (a number of Kootz artists left him to go to Janis c. 1953 (Motherwell, Guston and Gottlieb) but when Janis started showing Pop Art c. 1962 they also left Janis); Kline is considered one of the top 10 abstract expressionist artists in the US (the others are De Kooning, Rothko, Pollock, Hans Hofmann, Joan Mitchell, Motherwell, Still, Newman, and Guston);beautiful example of Kline's work, at auction paintings this size usually sell for $1 to $2 million.
